‘The Art of Video Games’ opens at SAAM 3/16-18

I’ll be joining another team this weekend…SPONTANEOUS ART- a roving performance art troupe that creates event specific performances that engage the arts community.

(not our real costume, we'll save that for those who come out to see us!)

During the opening weekend festivities for The Art of Video Games at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, we’ll be performing live video games in the Kogod Coutyard.

A slew of other video game-themed activities will be taking place all weekend as part of ‘Game Fest‘ opening weekend ceremonies.

Come join in the fun! I’ll be the one in the green robot suit dodging nerf balls that you’re throwing at us!

Join me this Sunday at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. I’ll be talking about a few pieces in their folk art collection. Afterwards, I’ll be giving a brief technical demonstration and attendees will have the opportunity to print a take-away tote bag!

I’m excited to be a part of the upcoming group exhibition, She Got Game, curated by Jeffry Cudlin, opening on January 13th at Arlington Arts Center. My DC Cheer! performance project will be featured, using documentation by photographer, E. Brady Robinson, and I’ll also be hosting a cheer workshop / cultivation event on February 11th.

SHE GOT GAME, curated by Jeffry Cudlin

EXHIBITION DATES: January 13 – March 18, 2012
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, January 13, 6 to 9 pm
Performances and workshops will take place all day on February 11th (time for DC Cheer workshop TBA)

In the past, professional sports and the visual arts have both kept women on the sidelines. SHE GOT GAME puts strong women artists and athletes front and center. For this show, curator Jeffry Cudlin has brought together 11 artists—men and women—who explore shifting contemporary perceptions of women’s bodies, gender roles, and identities through the lens of sports spectacle. Some of these artists offer iconic images of strong women athletes; others use the trappings of sport as a framework for performances about competition, objectification, and popular culture. Painted murals, larger-than-life-sized photos, videos, and installations depict women in professional tennis, bodybuilding, cheerleading, and even competitive eating. -Arlington Arts Center

Join us at our debut performance at the (e)merge art fair- an international art fair taking place at the Capital Skyline Hotel in SW Washington, DC. We’ll be performing outside of the event on opening night on Thursday, September 22 from 5-9pm. Our performance is free/open to the public but If you’d like to enter the event and see all of the artwork, performances, live music and festivities, you should purchase a ticket for the event on their web site. On Saturday, August 6, I’ll be teaching a screen-printing workshop at the Textile Museum as part of their current exhibition Green- the color and the cause.

Workshop attendees will learn the hand drawn stencil technique of screen printing and will create a pattern using some text of their choice. Participants are encouraged to bring in their favorite quote, lyric, bit of poetry, etc to reproduce.

Attendees can also bring in whatever materials (old curtains, wallpaper, sheets, tees, cardboard, paper) to print on once their stencil is created.

Handouts with detailed instructions will be distributed so the project can be repeated at home.

The discussion is followed by a party celebrating 10 years of Conner’s ‘Academy’ exhibition series, sponsored by Marvin Restaurant and the Pink Line Project.

The Printed Pattern :: Upcoming workshop at the Textile Museum

The Textile Museum has an amazing show up right now: Art by the Yard: Women Design Mid-Century Britain (which runs through September 12) features iconic patterns by three iconic designers who shaped the mid-century aesthetic with patterns that continue to inspire us today.

As part of the exhibition’s programming there is a series of exciting film screenings and workshops going on at the museum. On July 24th (2-4pm), I’ll be holding a workshop called ‘The Printed Pattern’ which will explore the basic methods of screen printing. The workshop includes a hands on portion where you’ll be able to print your own patterned pillowcases (set of two) using designs inspired by the works in the show.. I’m particularly a fan of the works by Lucienne Day.
